Spina Bifida Presenting with a Unique Complication: Uterovaginal Prolapse in a Neonate

Abstract

Uterovaginal prolapse (UVP) in neonates is a rare condition, with only a few cases reported in the literature. The exact etiology and pathogenesis of neonatal UVP are not fully understood. Nevertheless, it is believed that spina bifida, particularly myelomeningocele, is a common risk factor associated with the development of UVP in neonates. Defective innervation of the pelvic floor in such cases can lead to weakness of the pelvic muscles and ligaments, resulting in congenital uterovaginal prolapse. Consequently, UVP can manifest within the first few days of life or even at birth.
